For Clients · Yard Management
Choosing yard management software? Start with how your yard runs, not a feature list.
Yard management software runs the space between the gate and the dock door: trailer check-in and check-out, trailer and container location, yard truck moves, door assignment, and detention tracking. The selection fails when clients, the companies evaluating technology, compare feature lists, because every serious product has the features. What differs is whether the system fits how your yard actually runs: drop trailers or live loads, one site or a network, manual gate capture or automated, one customer's rules or many.
PreShiftIQ brings independent, client-aligned matching to the category. You complete a structured assessment of the operations your yard runs, your gate and move volumes, and the WMS and dock systems the yard data has to reach, and we match you on measured fit rather than marketing. PreShiftIQ charges the client nothing for the match.
Is the whiteboard actually the problem?
Sometimes not. A yard with a few dozen moves a day and a gate clerk who knows every trailer can run on a whiteboard and a radio for years. It fails when the yard outgrows one person's view: trailers get lost in the rows, detention charges arrive for trailers nobody knew were waiting, and doors sit empty while the right trailer is parked at the back fence.
A feature list cannot tell you whether a system handles the operations your yard runs most: drop pools, live loads, shuttle moves between buildings, containers and chassis. It cannot tell you whether gate automation is proven at your volume. And it cannot tell you whether a 3PL's separate customer rules are native or a workaround.
Those questions decide whether a yard system fits, and they decide whether it gets used or becomes shelfware next to the whiteboard it was meant to replace. That is where PreShiftIQ sits.
| The question | What a feature list tells you | What PreShiftIQ does |
|---|---|---|
| Which vendors belong on the list? | Whoever ranks for the search or sponsored the trade show | Vendors that cannot run the yard operations you rate as core are excluded before scoring begins |
| Does it fit how our yard runs? | A checkbox for "trailer tracking" | Depth across drop pools, live loads, shuttle moves, containers and chassis, and the other operations you rate, validated through structured interviews |
| Will it connect to our WMS? | An integrations logo wall | Which WMS and dock systems each vendor connects to is recorded; a connection to your WMS does not raise a vendor's score. |
| Is it proven at our volume? | Rarely stated | Your yard size, gate transactions, and yard moves set beside the largest customer each vendor serves, in each vendor's record |
| Can the decision be defended? | A spreadsheet, reconstructed after the fact | Every scoring decision written to an immutable, time-stamped record |
You enter vendor conversations with a shortlist built on how your yard actually runs, and a written requirements list the vendor has already seen.
Why reviews and analyst reports do not settle it either.
Star ratings reward the vendors who work them hardest. Analyst reports track vendor scale and marketing budget rather than operational fit. Every source a client reaches for has someone else's incentive behind it, and in yard management the cost of choosing wrong is slow and expensive: the gate staff work around the system, the trailers go back on the whiteboard, and the license renews anyway.
PreShiftIQ is the independent alternative. We work for the client, we validate through interviews rather than reviews, and we exclude the vendors that cannot serve you before you ever see a shortlist.
Built for distribution centers, plants, 3PLs, carrier terminals, and port and drayage yards.
A distribution center running drop pools, a 3PL keeping separate rules for each customer, and a port yard moving containers on chassis need different systems. Matching accounts for that before anything is scored.
Shipper and consignee distribution centers
Drop trailer pools, live loads, door assignment driven by what the building needs next, and detention tracked before the invoice arrives.
Manufacturing and production plants
Inbound materials staged for the line, shuttle moves between buildings, and outbound trailers released on schedule.
3PLs and contract warehouses
Separate yard rules for each customer account, customer-facing reporting, and multi-site visibility.
Carrier and LTL terminals and cross-docks
High gate volume, fast trailer turns, door swaps, and yard truck moves coordinated with the dock plan.
Drayage, port, and intermodal yards
Containers and chassis, rail and intermodal moves, and gate capture at volume.
What you get
A shortlist matched to your operation
Not the vendors who paid the most. The vendors that fit how your yard runs, what it handles, and the systems it has to reach, scored on measured fit against your stated requirements.
Interview-validated scorecards
Vendor capability is validated through structured interviews, not self-reported marketing claims, so the operations and coverage on your shortlist are what was checked.
Vendors who arrive prepared
The vendors you connect with already have your requirements in hand, so discovery starts where it usually ends. Better conversations, faster, and stronger cost avoidance on the decision itself.
How the yard management match works
- Complete a structured assessment of your yard: the operations it runs and how much of each, gate and location capture, yard size and move volumes, the customer accounts it serves, the systems the yard data has to reach, and the terms you will not accept.
- Get matched on measured fit. Vendors that cannot run the yard operations you rate as core are excluded before scoring begins.
- Connect with a shortlist of qualified vendors who arrive at discovery already prepared.
PreShiftIQ charges the client nothing for the match. You decide which vendors, if any, to move forward with.
What you see as a client
Your results are yours alone. Vendors never see each other's standing, and your identity is released only to a vendor that accepts your engagement. You see the vendors that clear our recommendation threshold, each with a fit index and a match level.

Scorecard for this match
Evaluated as: Shipper or consignee distribution center
Sample data shown for illustration. You receive each accepting vendor's scorecard exactly as it was measured for your match: the dimensions evaluated for your engagement, scored to one independent standard.
A platform that answers to you.
Our alignment is built into the platform, not just stated in a policy. Matching is payment-blind: what a vendor pays never enters the scoring path, and every scoring decision is written to an immutable, time-stamped record. The platform can demonstrate that your match was computed from measured fit and nothing else.
Your data is yours
Your information is released to a vendor only after that vendor accepts your match, and it is never sold or shared in identifiable form with anyone else.
Your team, your access
Invite colleagues or an advisor to help complete your assessment. You control who has access, and every collaborator is scoped to your account alone.
The category, covered.
38 yard management vendors mapped across the category and evaluated to one independent standard. You get the benefit of the category assessed as a whole, without doing the legwork yourself.
Catalog coverage, alphabetical; not a ranking or recommendation. Matches come only from the completed assessment of the client (the evaluating company).
- Loading the covered vendors…
Catalog inclusion is factual: the vendor sells into this vertical. It is sourced from public information and interviews, is not removable on request, and is never an endorsement or a statement of participation. Corrections to name, ownership, or product line are always accepted at info@preshiftiq.com.
Yard management software selection questions
What is yard management software?
Yard management software runs the space between the gate and the dock door: trailer check-in and check-out at the gate, trailer and container location in the yard, yard truck moves, door assignment, and detention tracking. It is distinct from dock scheduling, which books the appointment, and from a WMS, which runs the work inside the building. The best systems exchange data with both.
Our yard runs drop trailers and live loads. Does that change the software choice?
It is the first thing that does. Drop trailer pools, live loads, shuttle moves between buildings, containers and chassis, refrigerated and hazardous materials trailers, rail and intermodal, and cross-dock door swaps are each run differently. PreShiftIQ asks how much of each your yard runs. An operation you rate High is a requirement, and a vendor that does not offer it is excluded before scoring begins; a vendor that offers it with less depth scores lower.
Do we need gate automation and trailer location tracking?
It depends on volume. A yard with a few dozen moves a day can run on manual check-in, while a high-volume yard usually needs automated gate capture and live trailer location. PreShiftIQ asks what your gate and location capture must do, and vendors that cover it score higher. Your yard size, gate transactions, and yard moves are part of your assessment, and each vendor's scorecard records the largest customer it serves.
Does yard management software need to integrate with our WMS?
Often, yes. Door assignment and trailer priority work best when the yard knows what the building needs next. PreShiftIQ records which WMS each vendor connects to. A connection to your WMS does not raise a vendor's score, and no vendor is removed for lacking one.
We run a 3PL yard for several customers. Does that matter?
It does. A 3PL that keeps distinct yard rules for each customer account needs a system built for many accounts, not one site's rules applied to everyone. PreShiftIQ asks how many customer accounts need their own yard rules, and when there are more than five, vendors with native multi-account support score higher.
Are autonomous yard trucks part of the match?
They are part of every match. Each vendor's support for autonomous yard trucks, live, in pilot, or none, counts in its integration score for every client. If you require them now, vendors that support them also get credit for it, and if you plan for them within 24 months, that counts as a preference. A vendor is never removed for lacking them: a stated requirement adds weight to the vendors that cover it rather than excluding the rest.
Does PreShiftIQ charge the client anything?
No. PreShiftIQ charges the client (the evaluating company) nothing for the assessment, the match, or the shortlist. PreShiftIQ is paid by vendors at one published rate: 5 percent of first-year subscription value, due only when the matched client pays the vendor, the same for every vendor. There is no lead fee, and fee data has no input to the matching engine. Matching is payment-blind by architecture, not by policy.
